DIY Fashion That Doesn’t Look DIY

Whether you want to restyle clothes that no longer suit you or you’re just looking to spice up your wardrobe with some fun tweaks, DIY (Do It Yourself) Fashion techniques are a fun and cheap way to do so! DIY Fashion involves manipulating or repurposing items that you already have, letting you create new looks and styles without really investing in anything new. A super easy way to start is by using safety pins to raise your neckline, cinch your skirt, or change the fit of an item in some other way that you feel suits you better. Take it a step further by thinking a little outside of the box. You can repurpose items by wearing them in ways that you normally wouldn’t, which can unlock tons of new possibilities.

For instance, try using that old hair scarf that doesn’t quite work on your head as a belt around a plain dress or even loop it through your jeans to make a statement. You can also throw a strappy dress on over that crop top that your belly hangs out of to create a cute, classy outfit with a piece that would otherwise be collecting dust somewhere in your closet. If you feel like going even further with your craftiness, you can transform a shirt or an old pair of jeans by taking a pair of scissors to the sleeves or hemline – just make sure you mark a dotted line where you intend to cut, while trying it on, to make sure you don’t get an overly-hemmed or scraggly outcome.

Lastly, if you know your way around a basic sewing kit, try adding embellishment to simple pieces in your wardrobe, like plain t-shirts, dresses or old jeans. Find some pearl beads or classy studs at a craft store, like Michael’s, and add a little cluster of bling to the sleeves, hemline or collar! However far you choose to take your crafting, a little switch-up to your basic clothes can go a long way in making your wardrobe feel revamped and will likely push off that next shopping spree for a little longer!
